Overview
This project actively empowers teachers to give students an exciting experience when learning about communities. The Social Studies curriculum is enhanced with the integration of web sites, trade books, and technology to support student learning. Students will construct their own knowledge about the way climate, topography, geography, natural resources and economy affect the way people live in a community. Students will observe, evaluate and record what they have learned on Think.com, a secure online web page creator. The project incorporates information literacy, math and science to further enhance student learning. The culminating activity is a Think.com group project page showcasing student work.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of map skills by appropriately using vocabulary, diagrams and maps. Using graphs, charts, pictures and other research tools, students will be able to explain how climate, topography, geography, natural resources and economy impact the way people live in communities around the world.
Initially students will have an opportunity to learn about different communities in the United States. For mastery, students then research a global community.
Using Think.com the class will create an online KWL chart and use it as a springboard for their research. The information gathered on the chart serves as a guide to help students determine what they want learn about their community. The results of student's research is enhanced by downloaded graphics, scanned drawings, multimedia, interviews and global communication.
Project group pages are shard online with students in other schools using epals and Think.com. |
