Pacing

 

I. Getting Started-Weeks 1 and 2
Distribute parent letter
Have parents sign the DOE consent form and Think.com consent form
Familiarize yourself with available resources
Set up Think.com student accounts, group pages and invite students to the project
Enlist school support: Art teacher- may be able to assist with illustrations Computer teacher- can support students with research, saving and importing graphics Librarian-  can provide books about the community being studied Science teacher- may assist with lessons on weather and climate Parents- may be able to provide primary source information about the community being studied

II. Starting the Project-Weeks 3, 4, and 5
Show the project overview Power Point  to the class
Discuss the over arching question
Go over vocabulary with students
Have class decide on a U. S. community to study
Review the main categories: Climate, Economy, Culture, Natural Resources, Topography and Geography
Using Think.com create a KW chart, with the class, for each category

III. Using Think.com- Weeks 6 and 7
Discuss with students Think.com rules
Give each student their username and password
Have students create their own Think.com first page
Demonstrate how to use the Think.com tools

IV. Project Research-Weeks 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12
Create cooperative groups
Assign research questions to each group
Students conduct research
Students post research results on their Think.com page
After reviewing work, students then post on the group pages
