Overview

This project challenges students to examine and explore the community surrounding their school and how it has changed over time. Fourth grade students will develop a simple webpage using wiki technology on their school's community from past to present.  Students will interview people in the community to develop a rich understanding of past and present history. The Social Studies curriculum is enhanced with the integration of technology to support student learning. Students will construct their own knowledge about the history of a given community. Students will research, observe, and record what they have learned on a wiki - a secure, online, collaborative web page creator. The project is multi-disciplinary and incorporates information literacy, science, language arts, in addition to social studies to further enhance student learning. The culminating activity is a class created wiki showcasing student research and findings.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of their community by developing a rich, comprehensive website which will be online and shared with others. The results of student's research will be enhanced by graphics, scanned drawings, multimedia, interviews, interactive tours, and global communication and collaboration.
