Differentiated Learning
The Social Studies curriculum is enhanced with the integration of web sites, trade books, and technology to support student learning. This project allows for differentiated instruction throughout the process. Students read books and have access to web resources on their level. In additon, students have opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of content through the use of pictures, interviews, charts, graphs, interactive maps, and audio/video. This collaboration of skills will be showcased online to reinforce their learning.
Students can work independently, with partners, or in small groups to allow for the pacing necessary for the class and needs of the students. Struggling students will have the opportunity to work with peers in collaborative groups, to allow the teacher to scaffold support and intervention.
For English Language and Dual Language Learners, students can write and speak on the topic in both languages, to reinforce their native language skills, while extending their acquisition of their new language.
The project also incorporates elements of informational literacy to further enhance student learning. The culminating activity is an online wiki which will showcase student research and work. Students will share their wikis online with other members of the school and global community.
