Differentiated Learning
While this project is designated as a kindergarten through grade two project, it can be differentiated to fit into any grade level. ABC Books can be as simple as one word and a matching picture on a page or as complex as a book focused on a topic and several paragraphs written about the idea that corresponds with each letter. In addition, students have opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of content through the use of pictures, charts, graphs and verbal presentations that highlight their individual learning styles. This collaboration of skills will be showcased online to reinforce their learning.
This project can be worked into any content area, including the non-fiction writing unit that would allow students to choose their own topic. Integrating this into a unit for social studies or science forces students to research deeper into the content and provides a culminating project for the unit of study.
Grouping is another way to differentiate this project. Struggling students can have the opportunity to work with peers either in heterogeneous or homogeneous groups, to allow the teacher to scaffold support and intervention. Also, working on a book with a partner or group allows for much more support and interaction that does completing a book individually. Those seeking to further differentiation can have the students choose whether they work independently or with a partner. As a culminating project, students could each take a page of the book as opposed to creating a book on their own or with a small group.
For English Language Learners, students can write and speak on the topic in both languages, to reinforce their native language skills while extending their acquisition of their new language. Dual Language classrooms can choose to create books in both languages in separate content areas. |
