Mini Lessons and Activities

Lesson 1
Objective:
To introduce students to the project
Materials:
Projector
Laptops
Atlas or Social Studies books
Paper, markers, colored markers and crayons
Internet:
http://earth.google.com/ Use school address
Procedure:

Using Google.earth type in the address of the school.

Have students talk about what they see. 
Spend some time looking at different types maps
Review map vocabulary for word wall
Discuss elements of maps
Go over directions and compass rose
Activity:


Students will draw a map of their community. They should include directions, map key and labels
Compare drawn maps with actual maps

Lesson 2
Objective:
To locate the community we are studying
Materials:
Laptop
Projector

Maps
Procedure:
Review vocabulary: weather, topography, geography and natural resources
Using Google.earth and maps locate where the community is in the world
Explain that where a community is located on the earth will infulence a lot about its weather, topography, geography and natural resources
Using google.earth.com type in the community of study (Ex. Paris, France)
Zoom in and ask students what they notice? Chart responses
Compare to map and ask students to comment on differences. Chart responses
Activity
Have student jot down what they know about the community and what they want to know about their community

Recognizing Hyperlinks
Type www.yahooligans.com in the address bar and put honeybees in the search bar. Demonstrate what hyperlinks look like and how they work. Have students look at an article (projected through an LCD projector or using a smartboard). After a first reading have students look for 3-dimensional learning strategies, where other sites might be linked to or cited.
Lesson 3
Objective:
To introduce students to Think.com
Materials:
Laptop
Projector
Procedure:
Distribute Think.com passwords and usernames
Model and have students open their web browser and log into Think.com
Go over the rules and Internet security
Demonstrate how to edit the student page
Activity:
Students will log into their Think.com
Edit their page
Explore the tools of Think.com
Lesson 4
Objective:
Generate questions to assist students in learning about the topography, geography, natural resources, climate economy and culture of the community they are studying
Materials:
Laptop
Projector
Internet
Trade books
Procedure:
Review word wall for the project
Have student work in their cooperative groups to discuss Culture includes food that people eat, clothing, holidays. Climate includes the Weather, temperature, precipitation, humidity and biome. Topography and Geography include population, waterforms, landforms, natural resources and transportation. Economy includes money, jobs, industry, education and politics.
Model how to use www.factmonster.com
Activity:
Students will use the website Factmonster and tradebooks to answer their questions and record their information
Lesson 5
Objective:
Students will post the answers to their research question on Think.com
Materials
Laptop
Internet-www.factmonster.com
Notebook where answers to questions are recorded
Procedure:
Students are in their cooperative groups
Students log into Think.com
They title the page with the name of the community
Using "Create Tools" they select write
Students type their question and the answer
Next students post the information on the project page
Click on the Project Tab
Students select the category they are researching
Students type the answer
