Many say the most important skill for the 21st century is adaptability and openness to change. Of course, as the saying goes, the only thing that’s constant is change. I understand the frustration with moving platforms, but I appreciate that most of you are giving it a whirl and hope that you may even come to like the new platform. I look forward to your thoughts on the platform next year indeed!

I’d also like to explain some reasons for the move and clear up misconceptions.

The site just does not contain 15-year-old girls from Texas. When I first launched the site there were a few spammers, which are very easy to remove. I would not advocate an open site when working with students, but my belief is its fine for adults if we get the occasional spam and a learning opportunity in how to ban a member. One benefit of having a site open is the ease of use. Everyone can come to the party as we all have something useful to offer, unless there is something inappropriate. Then necessary actions are taken.

Another benefit to the openness is expanding our horizons. Connecting with other educators and experts from around the globe is something I value and I know many others at the NYC DOE appreciate. I prefer not to isolate NYC in our little capsule. When we do, we often find we have a lot more in common with other districts and a lot to learn from each other then we may have initially realized. I hope that answers why the site is as open as it is and I do appreciate members alerting me when there is any inappropriate activity.

I want to address the perception about having to click around more in the Ning. I think that’s just a matter of getting used to the platform. You actually don’t. All new topics or comments rise to the top and you can also view latest activity in the left-hand nav. Additionally, you will receive a notification (which you have the option to turn off) any time a conversation in which you are involved has been updated.

One of the features I enjoy most is the cost. Free! For educators with students it’s also ad free.

Of course, if some of you want to keep connecting on this forum, that is fine, but I do hope to continue to see you at TED21C.ning.com too.
So what happens after that? I mean, the current computers that are ordered from Dell or HP seem to have "Vista Business 32-bit downgrade to XP pre-installed" as the only OS option.

On another note, is Windows 7 64-bit available through FAMIS?
I've tried the Win7 RC on different types of computers in my building, and it seems to run fine...
To the Admins...

... I realize adding the "Attachment" feature to this Forum will require giving registered users storage space (which might not be allowed/possible), but I was wondering if that was ever a consideration...

I ask because in a recent thread someone asked about the latest Apple FAMIS catalog price sheet. Someone linked to the old sheet. I have the latest and was going to post it as an attachment so everyone could download it.

If OIT is taking suggestions about the Forum, I'd love to have the ability to attach files to a post. Ongoing threads with user manuals, price sheets, white papers, etc could be a very valuable resource.

Just a thought/suggestion...

                                      I agree Paul.

The Ning platform is very cool, I've used it as an internal resource for staff and parents in the past. But I agree, this NYCDOE OIT forum I find to be much more valuable. I like to hear about tech in other states, but for that I can pick up an issue of Tech & Learning or some other publication.

This Forum is great because I get specific answers to specific DoE related questions. I can just imagine posting a blog or question on a national (or international) tech teacher forum and having to filter through tons of "what are you talking about/it makes no sense/that's not how we do it" kind of responses from people not familiar with the DoE nuances.

The only thing I think could make this OIT Discussion forum better is if we got all the city tech teachers to check and contribute it more regularly.

                                      Hey Steve,
We have been using eChalk again for 2 years now.... after trying it out many years ago.
Positives..... each staff member is accountable for their own page.... pta groups have a page too..... easy interface.....
Negatives....... weekend updates cause site to go down...... many users cannot log onto one drop at a time b/c it becomes too slow..... no hosting of photos......

Staff needs a lot of training and it will work it they are told that parents expect to use it
All in all....... it is working out very well!!!!
